Rare has a long history of game development that extends back to the 8-bit era. It has been responsible for developing some of the best known titles on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Nintendo 64. Rare was acquired by Microsoft in 2002 and moved into the High-Def era with the release of two 360 launch titles ? PERFECT DARK ZERO AND KAMEO: ELEMENTS OF POWER. This talk discusses the shared technology used at Rare for the production of Xbox 360 and earlier titles. The problems of developing shared technology are presented and the good and bad aspects or Rare?s approach are described. The role of internal shared technology in the context of sophisticated middleware is also considered.
