GDC State of the Industry: PS4 leads console interest, as self-funding reigns

The Game Developers Conference has polled more than 2,600 North American game developers who attended GDC 2013 to compose the second annual State of the Industry Survey, which provides a snapshot of the games industry and illustrates industry trends before the start of GDC 2014 in March.
Notable trends shown in the poll results include a preference for the PlayStation 4 platform for console developers, the prevalence of self-funded projects, the changing reliance and relationship with publishers, and myriad other trends that offer a glimpse into the future landscape of the games industry.

GDC 2014 reveals game lineup for 'Doing It On The Table' exhibit

Passes for the Game Developers Conference 2014 are still available, and today we're excited to announce more details about the 'Doing It On The Table' board game exhibit, which will be open to all GDC passholders (from Expo to All-Access) at various points during the week of the 2014 Game Developers Conference, March 17-21.
The exhibit, curated by NYU Game Center founding faculty member and veteran game designer Eric Zimmerman, will take place in a special lounge on the second floor of Moscone West.
It will offer a comfortable space for GDC 2014 attendees to play card and board games made by notable video game developers, including the creators of games like Ridiculous Fishing and Saints Row, some of whom will be available in the lounge on Tuesday, March 18 at 4 PM to showcase their games personally.

GDC 2014 debuts a fresh batch of Localization Summit sessions

Game Developers Conference 2014 organizers are highlighting a few noteworthy Localization Summit talks for the upcoming March conference, including sessions explaining how to localize Chinese games for foreign audiences, a roundtable discussion on the merits of machine translation, and more.

Anita Sarkeesian, Riot co-founders win GDCA 2014 Special Awards

The 14th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards organizers have revealed its two final Special Award winners for this year.
The Ambassador Award, honoring someone who is helping video games "advance to a better place" through advocacy or action, is going to media critic Anita Sarkeesian, creator of Feminist Frequency, a video series that deconstructs representations of women in game and pop culture narratives.
The Pioneer Award, honoring a breakthrough tech and gameplay design milestone, will go to Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill, the co-founders of Riot Games.

Beyond the finalists: IGF 2014 Best In Visual Art jury picks

Gamasutra's Alex Wawro highlights more top-tier games that were nominated by jurors for this year's IGF, but didn't achieve the critical mass of votes necessary to be named a finalist.
The main IGF competition has a panel of judges that includes representatives from the mainstream game industry, previous IGF winners and finalists, other independent game developers, and a smattering of indie-friendly game journalists.
In addition, every IGF award has its own jury staffed by experts in the contexts and disciplines that define the award. The main IGF jury recommend individual titles to these award-specific juries, who then cast votes on which games should be nominated to compete for the award.

GDC 2014 alternative controller exhibit 'ALT.CTRL' announces lineup

Game Developers Conference 2014 organizers have chosen 14 teams for the debut of ALT.CTRL.GDC, an on-site exhibit of alternative control schemes and interactions, including the Oculus Rift and AKAI LPD8 paired Please Don't, Spacedog!, caterpillar sim Roflpillar, and 16-button arcade stick-controlled Tenya Wanya Teens, co-created by Katamari Damacy director Keita Takahashi.
ALT.CTRL.GDC is open to all attendees and will make its debut showcase on one of GDC's exhibit floors from Wed-Fri, March 19th-21st. Out of almost 90 submissions, organizers have chosen 14 indie-centric, one-of-a-kind game peripherals and unique tech pairings that challenge commonly accepted forms of input.

GDC 2014 announces winners for Game Narrative poster sessions

GDC and the Game Narrative Summit are proud to announce the winners of the 2014 edition of the annual Student Narrative Analysis Competition, who will all receive passes to this year's March conference in San Francisco, CA.
Here's how it works: Every year, leading game design programs at universities across the country integrate the competition into their academic curricula. Each participating student conducts a detailed structured analysis of the narrative elements of a game title of their choice.
The resulting papers are submitted to the GDC Game Narrative Summit advisors for review, and the entrants with the most promising submissions are then invited to present poster sessions of their work to their future professional peers at the Game Narrative Summit.

Ken Levine joins GDC 2014 speaker lineup to talk about 'Narrative Legos'

Irrational Games co-founder Ken Levine is coming to GDC 2014 to give a talk about how we can and should be building non-linear, replayable game sequences that can be combined like narrative Legos.
Levine, currently best known for creating the Bioshock franchise, has spent some time thinking about how narrative in games can be designed to draw on the strengths of interactive media -- notably, dynamic content and the ability of the player to participate in the story.
